Introduction

Share Access Permissions can be set based on:

  • Users (including a guest access option)
  • Groups
  • Gateways

There are available three permission levels:

  • Read/Write (RW)
  • Read-Only (RO)
  • No Access (NO)

The access permission for a particular user will be determined by the most restrictive permission control. For example, if a user has Read/Write permission to a share, but the gateway has Read-Only access to the share, then the user will only be able to read.

Some share access permissions can be set in several places:

  • During share creation
  • File System page
  • Adding a gateway
  • Devices page

Share Creation

When creating a new share, you will see options to set Read/Write permissions for All Gateways or No Gateways and for enabling guest access.  These settings can later be modified in the File System and Devices pages.

File System Page

From the File System page, you can specify access permission to the share by user or by gateway.

Manage Share Permissions by User

To manage the share permissions by user, go to the File System page, select a share, then click Permissions.

In the example above, the Default Access is set to Read/Write.  Other options include Read-Only and No Access.  The Default Access setting determines which exceptions are available next to each username and can be found in the table below:

Default AccessRead/Write exceptionRead-Only exception
Read/Write
available
Read-Onlyavailable
No Accessavailableavailable

For example, if you want the Default Access for all users to be Read/Write but want to limit dltest0's access, you can make user dltest0 Read-Only by enabling the circle in the user's row under Read-Only.

Manage Permissions to a Share by Gateway

To manage the gateway permissions, go to the File System page, select a share, click Permissions, then click Gateway.

Here you can assign the permissions for each gateway. In the screenshot above, dl-gateway0 has Read/Write access to the share Dltest0, and dl-lab-laptop-0 has No Access.  If a user connects to dl-gateway0 and accesses the Dltest0 share, he will have full read and write access.  If the same user connects to dl-lab-laptop0, he will not be able to access the Dltest0 share from that CacheDrive.

Adding a Gateway

When adding a new gateway, you will have the option of make all shares or no shares available to the gateway in Read/Write mode.

Devices Page

From the Devices page, you can specify access permission to the share by gateway.

To manage the share permissions by gateway, go to the Devices page, select a share, then click Permissions.

In the above example, dl-lab-laptop-0 has Read/Write access to the Accounting share, Read-Only access to the CustomerDemo share, and No Access for all other shares.
