The time it takes to upload data to the cloud is determined by the number of files, the size of the files, and the speed of your network connection (bandwidth and latency). When faced with use cases that require a lot of files to be uploaded to the cloud, Morro Data uses the Replicate Share type to improve the efficiency of uploading to the cloud.

Why is Replicate Share faster and why can't Sync Share be as fast?

A Sync Share enables multiple CacheDrives to act as a master to a share. That means files can be copied to the CacheDrive and need to be synchronized with all other CacheDrives. With the possibility of each CacheDrive to write data to the cloud, the synchronization requires calculations and checks to make sure to ensure the integrity of the file versions and the file data.

Replicate Share enables a single CacheDrive to act as a master to a share. With a single master, the calculations and checks are greatly reduced because we know that data is only moving in one direction. In addition, Replicate Share allows for multi-threaded queue processing thus speeding up the process even more.

On-Boarding Files to Morro Data

When just getting started with Morro Data, administrators must move all their files from their current file repositories to the CloudNAS. To make the upload as efficient as possible, please perform the following steps.

1. Create each Share as a Replicate Share.

2. Copy files from the source share to the Replicate Share.

3. Once the copy process is completed, upload the files using the SYNC NOW from the Scheduled Sync.

4. Once the sync is completed, Convert the Replicate Share to a Sync Share (click the link for more information on how to upgrade the share).

You can copy files using third party applications such as GS RichCopy 360, FreeFileSync, GoodSync, or Robocopy. Some of these applications, such as Robocopy or GS RichCopy 360, allow Active Directory file permissions to be migrated with the files.

Note: To migrate Active Directory permissions, make sure the system is already in Active Directory Mode before moving files.

This will provide the fastest way to upload data to the cloud by using Replicate Share to on-board the files.

How much time is required to convert a Replicate Share to a Sync Share?

Converting a Replicate Share to a Sync Share can be a lengthy process (an hour or more).  The conversion involves traversing the entire share and determining the status of each file, then synchronizing any file additions, deletions, and modifications.  The total time is highly dependent on the number of files in the share, the amount of changes that need to be synchronized, and hardware performance.

Limitations:

  • A share can only be upgraded from Replicate to Sync share. Once a share is converted to Sync Share, the Replicate Share process cannot be used.
  • Replicate Share is a schedule-based sync. If the schedule is not activated, the files will not be uploaded to the cloud.
  • During the conversion process, the share will be set to read-only.
